Write with Color

Writing is about seeing. It is about paying attention. --Kate DeCamillo

In this one day workshop, teachers will compose several free verse poems as they participate in creative writing activities designed to bridge grammar to writing and to encourage out-of-the-box thinking. For example, color takes on smells, makes sounds, and has a flavor.

“The ‘nickel poem’ awakened one of my reluctant writers.
He loved cutting off (literally with scissors)
the first two columns of his writing to reveal his poem.”

“Since I used the ‘color poem’ with my class,
I’ve noticed more sensory details, similes, and metaphors in their writing.”

“What I like is that each of the activities can be used
to teach so much about the basics of writing.”

Participants will
